CSIR-AMPRI SODAR System was inaugurated at IMD

Event Overview:

  • SODAR (Sound Detection and Ranging) system was developed by CSIR-AMPRI Bhopal and inaugurated on the Foundation Day of CSIR (26 th September 2025) in India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi .
  • CSIR-AMPRI and IMD signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish cooperation.

About SODAR System:

  • SODAR is an acoustic remote sensing that employs sound waves to examine the parameters in the atmosphere.
  • It offers very essential information on the speed of wind, direction, turbulence and thermal stratification up to some specific altitudes .
  • Weather forecast, dispersion of pollution and dynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer .

Collaborative Objectives (MoU):

  • Enhance the partnership research on climate and environmental sciences .
  • Further encourage the exchange of data between meteorological departments and research institutions.
  • Increase weather forecasting, disaster reduction, and meteorological research capacity in India .

About CSIR-AMPRI:

  • Bhopal, CSIR-Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI) .
  • Previously called Regional Research Laboratory .
  • Founded in May 1981 at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Specializes in the development of materials and process engineering .

Significance:

  • Signifies effective dissemination of native technology by research organization to operating agency .
  • Improves the home-grown technology in India in atmospheric monitoring .
  • Promotes climate action and disaster management policy making using evidence .
