UAE Completes First Cross-Border CBDC Transaction with China
The United Arab Emirates has achieved a significant milestone in global financial innovation by completing its first central bank digital currency (CBDC) payment to China. The transfer was executed through the newly introduced Jisr platform , signalling a new phase of digital connectivity and deepening financial cooperation between the two countries.
Launch of the Jisr CBDC Settlement Network
The inaugural transaction took place during high-level bilateral meetings in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to modernising cross-border payment systems. The Jisr platform—developed in collaboration with Emirati and Chinese banking institutions—enables instant, secure and cost-efficient CBDC settlements . It aims to replace slow, intermediary-heavy international payment routes with direct digital transfers. More regional central banks are expected to join the platform in 2026 as part of its planned expansion.
Interlinking of Real-Time Payment Systems
A major component of the partnership is the interconnection of the UAE and China’s instant payment systems , enabling round-the-clock cross-border transactions for residents, students, and businesses. This integration is expected to improve speed, reduce remittance costs, and support trade and academic payments through seamless real-time infrastructure.
Additionally, the launch of the Jaywan–UnionPay multi-scheme prepaid card enhances consumer payment capabilities. The card offers domestic settlement in the UAE while providing global acceptance through UnionPay, creating a unified payment solution for travellers and expatriates.
