Dhanteras 18 October The First Day of Diwali-Meaning and Major Facts

 

  • Dhanteras is the onset of a five day festival called Diwali. It is during the Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha month of Kartik. Dhanteras will be celebrated with auspicious timing starting on 18 October afternoon and will continue to 19 October.
  • Significance of Dhanteras
    • This day is commemorated to goddess Lakshmi to bring wealth and prosperity.
    • It also has a connection with Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda who was created in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) which is synonymous with health and well-being.
    • It is said that lighting four-faced earthen lamps (Deepak) in the night will bring luck and eliminate bad omen in the house.
  • Favorable Dhanteras Activities.
    • The purchase of gold, silver, utensils or other new items in the house is greatly preferred.
    • Individuals wash and paint their houses in preparation of Goddess Lakshmi coming home.
    • In the evening special prayers are offered in the Pradosh Kaal and Deepdan Muhurat.
  • Key Rituals and Beliefs
    • Putting lamps at the entrance of the house is a sign of welcoming good luck and wealth.
    • Worship is also done to Lord Kubera, treasurer of the gods, in order to be economically stable.
    • It is supposed that by following the right muhurat to shop and perform puja, prosperity is improved.

    • Dhanteras is a festival on health, wealth and well being. It reminds the worshippers of the blessings of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari and makes them start the Diwali festivities with a clean mind, belief, and the hope of a good year to come.
