Role and evolution of vice president of India

The election of C. P. Radhakrishnan as the new Vice President of India is carry on to the long held office that is the second highest constitutional office in the Constitution , Article 63. In addition to this post of symbol, the Vice President is the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and takes over the responsibilities of the President when the President is vacated or incapacitated. The office has developed over the years since its establishment in 1952 in accordance with the political, social, and constitutional changes in India.

Philosophical Beginnings (1952-1969)

The first Vice Presidents were philosophers and liberationists who put their philosophies and learning in the position.

  • The first Vice President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , established the mood with his philosophical insight and reverence to parliamentary tradition.
  • Secular values also were reinforced by Zakir Husain , an educationist, before he became President.
  • Labour leader V. V. Giri gave the post an activist feel and history was made when he was independently running in the presidential elections in 1969.

Stabilising Force in Political Flux (1969-1987).

  • As acting President of the Emergency B. D. Jatti was handling a sensitive period with discretion.
  • Mohammad Hidayatullah who was the former Chief Justice strengthened rule of law.

Transition and Social Inclusion (1987-2002)

During this period the Vice Presidency was a presidential stepping stone.

  • The first Dalit Vice President (K. R. Narayanan) and Shankar Dayal Sharma (symbolised inclusiveness and diplomacy).
  • Krishan Kant was a socialist, freedom fighter and had to struggle against such difficulties as the 2001 Parliament attack, but was killed in the office.

Modern Political Period (2002-Current)

It became a more political part and the leaders were attracted directly by the party systems.

  • Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the BJP representative when it came to complexities in coalition.
  • Mohammad Hamid Ansari had served two terms and he focused on parliamentary discipline.
  • The rural development and active discussion were raised by M. Venkaiah Naidu .
  • Jagdeep Dhankhar was a law-abiding governor that stepped down in 2025 due to health reasons.
