Meghalaya Hosts First Northeast India Organic Week
Meghalaya has inaugurated the first-ever Northeast India Organic Week , a four-day convergence designed to position the region as a global hub for premium organic produce. The event marks a strategic shift toward export-driven agriculture and highlights the potential of the Northeast as a biodiversity powerhouse with strong community-based farming systems.
Building Global Market Presence Through Collaboration
The programme is being jointly organised by the Meghalaya Agriculture Department, APEDA, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and IFOAM–Organics Asia . Officials emphasise that the event will create new market pathways by connecting organic farmers and FPOs with overseas buyers. It also aims to enhance regional identity through knowledge exchange, certification awareness and sustainable production practices.
International Delegations Strengthen Trade Prospects
Buyers, government representatives and agribusiness participants from 13 countries , including Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, New Zealand and Mongolia, are attending. A key highlight is the APEDA Buyer-Seller Meet , offering direct negotiation platforms for exports. Experts believe that such structured trade interactions can significantly boost the global visibility of Northeast organic produce.
Showcasing Indigenous Organic Wealth
The event places Meghalaya’s flagship crops in focus—Lakadong turmeric, high-altitude ginger, citrus fruits, pineapple, black pepper and aromatic spices. APEDA officials observe that the state’s consistent growth and environmentally aligned farming systems make it ideal for organic expansion at scale.
