Indian Navy Commissions INAS 335 ‘Ospreys’ with MH-60R Helicopters

MH-60R Squadron Strengthens Naval Aviation on Western Seaboard

The Indian Navy has commissioned INAS 335 ‘Ospreys’ at INS Hansa, Goa , formally inducting its second squadron of MH-60R multi-role helicopters . The move significantly strengthens naval aviation capabilities on the western seaboard, enhancing India’s readiness in an increasingly complex maritime security environment.

Strategic Boost to Western Maritime Security
Commissioning the squadron, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi highlighted the changing geopolitical landscape, rapid technological evolution, and the rise of non-traditional maritime threats. He stressed that credible deterrence and robust maritime security are essential to safeguard India’s sea lines of communication and expanding maritime interests. The induction of INAS 335 bolsters the Navy’s ability to respond swiftly across the western maritime theatre.

Advanced Multi-Role Capabilities
The MH-60R helicopters are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, advanced avionics, and a potent weapons suite. Designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) , maritime strike , and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions, the platform substantially enhances maritime domain awareness and rapid response. The helicopter’s operational effectiveness has already been demonstrated during major exercises, including TROPEX-25 , Tri-Services Exercise 2025 , and Operation Sindoor .

Historical Context and Force Modernisation
The commissioning aligns with important naval milestones. The year 2025 marks 75 years of the Fleet Air Arm , which transformed the Navy into a multidimensional force. December 17 also commemorates Operation Vijay (1961) , when naval aviation played a decisive role in the liberation of Goa. Admiral Tripathi also outlined future capability expansion, including the induction of 15 MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones and 26 Rafale-M carrier-borne fighters .

Aatmanirbharta and Deployment Readiness
The Navy emphasised Aatmanirbharta , integrating indigenous weapons, sensors, software-defined radios, data links and depth charges on the MH-60R platform. With indigenous training, maintenance and infrastructure support, INAS 335 is fully operational from day one , reinforcing shipborne aviation as a core pillar of India’s maritime power.
