India Leads in Sector of Livestock at FAO Global Conference

1. Event Overview

  • Event: Attended the 2nd Global Congress on Sustainable Livestock Transformation.

  • India: The First Vice-Chair of the FAO Sub- Committee on Livestock.

2. Global Liverage of India in the livestock.

  • Milk Production: India is the largest milk producer in the world with its production of close to 25 percent of the world production (239 million tonnes).
  • Eggs & Meat: It ranks 2nd as an egg producer and one of the biggest exporters of buffalo meat.
  • Economic Impact: Dairy industry alone makes a contribution of between 5-5.5 percent to the national economy and supports 8 crore farmers.

3. Sector Growth & Productivity

  • The Compound Annual Growth rate (CAGR) of the livestock industry stands at astonishing 12.77 percent and the Agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA) of this sector is 31 percent.
  • Through the rapid growth of milk production, the production grew in 2014-15, and it moved to 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24.
  • India has recorded the highest growth in bovine productivity of 27.39 (2014-2022).

4. Important Government Projects and Infrastructure.

  • National Digital Livestock Mission (Bharat Pashudhan): digitally registered 353 million animals and 94 million livestock owners.
  • Rashtriya Gokul mission: Has benefited more than 92 million animals benefitting 56 million farmers.
  • Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund: USD 3.5 billion fund to enhance investment in infrastructure to support the dairy and processing industry.
  • Vaccination: India operates the largest livestock vaccination program in the world with 1.2 billion doses of injections every year.

5. Global Health and Women Empowerment.

  • Women: Female workers form more than 70 per cent of the dairy workforce and this has been possible with programs such as MAITRIs and A-HELP.
  • One Health Approach: India: India is a supporter of the integrated One Health approach.
  • Pandemic Preparedness: India is receiving USD 25 million G20 Pandemic Fund to enhance animal health security.
  • International Diplomacy: Ireland and India co-sponsored the resolution on the International Day of Milk which was supported by FAO.
