Goa CM Launches New Edition of History That India Ignored

Book Revisits Unsung Freedom Fighters, Savarkar and Goa’s Liberation

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday launched the latest edition of History That India Ignored , authored by veteran journalist and Prem Prakash , Chairman of Asian News International. Describing the book as a crucial corrective to selective historiography, the Chief Minister said it plays an important role in reconnecting younger generations with overlooked chapters of India’s freedom struggle.

Reclaiming Neglected Freedom Struggle Narratives

Speaking at the launch, Sawant said the publication was more than a literary exercise—it was an act of national responsibility. He underlined that the book is grounded in documentary evidence and intellectual rigour at a time when simplified or distorted narratives often shape public memory. According to him, the work brings to light the sacrifices of hundreds of freedom fighters whose contributions rarely find mention in conventional history textbooks.

Focus on Savarkar and the INA

The new edition devotes considerable attention to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar , examining his role in the freedom movement and the circumstances of his arrest and long imprisonment. Sawant noted that Savarkar’s legacy has been repeatedly misrepresented, and the book attempts to address these distortions with historical context. It also revisits the Battle of Imphal and the role of the Indian National Army under Subhash Chandra Bose , highlighting lesser-known military resistance against colonial rule.

Goa’s Liberation Given Due Place

A chapter on Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule holds special significance, the Chief Minister said. Goa was freed in 1961 , much later than most parts of India, after years of struggle, imprisonment and sacrifice by thousands of Goans. Sawant observed that this movement has not received proportionate national recognition. The book helps bridge that gap, he added, recalling that Prem Prakash personally witnessed the surrender of the Portuguese administration.

Why the Book Matters

By documenting untold stories and neglected personalities, History That India Ignored broadens the understanding of India’s freedom movement beyond dominant narratives. The book encourages readers to engage with history in a more comprehensive and inclusive manner.
