Uttarakhand to Levy Green Tax on Out-of-State Vehicles from December 2025

  • Uttarakhand will impose an environmental tax on vehicles entering the state from December 2025. The initiative aims to reduce pollution, protect the Himalayan ecosystem, and fund conservation efforts.

Key Details:

  • Tax Rates:  Varying fees will be applied:

    • ₹80 for small vehicles

    • ₹250 for small cargo vehicles

    • ₹140 for buses

    • ₹120 to ₹700 for trucks (based on weight)

  • Collection Method:  The process is fully automated. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 37 entry points will identify vehicles. The tax will then be automatically deducted via the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) system and transferred to the state.

Context:
The tax targets the high volume of tourist and commercial vehicles to preserve the environment in hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital. Several other states, including Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, already have similar green tax policies.
