Oman’s Shift to Polymer Currency: Design, Security and Significance

Oman has taken a notable step in modernising its currency system with the unveiling of its first-ever polymer one-rial banknote . Issued by the Central Bank of Oman , the new note will officially enter circulation on January 11, 2026 , and will coexist with the existing paper-based one-rial notes as legal tender. The move marks an important upgrade in durability, security, and design standards for the Sultanate’s currency.

Transition to Polymer Banknotes

This is the first instance of Oman adopting polymer material for any of its banknotes. Polymer notes are known to last significantly longer than traditional cotton-based currency, making them especially suitable for countries with hot and humid climates. Their resistance to wear, moisture, and tearing helps reduce replacement frequency and long-term printing costs. Oman’s transition also places it among a growing group of nations that have adopted polymer to strengthen currency integrity.

Design Inspired by Heritage and Development

The new one-rial note measures 145 × 76 millimetres and combines cultural, environmental, and economic themes. The front side features the Oman Botanic Garden , symbolising biodiversity conservation and sustainability. The reverse highlights the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex , alongside imagery of the Duqm Port and Refinery , reflecting Oman’s industrial growth and strategic economic diversification.

Enhanced Security Features

Security has been significantly upgraded in the polymer design. A large transparent window , inspired by the arched structure of the Oman Botanic Garden, serves as a key anti-counterfeiting element. A colour-shifting foil depicting the frankincense tree appears on the front, while the Central Bank’s logo on the reverse is printed using iridescent, colour-changing ink , making duplication extremely difficult.
