India and Maldives Launch 14th Ekuverin Military Exercise in Thiruvananthapuram
India and Maldives have begun the 14th edition of their annual defence exercise Ekuverin , hosted this year in Thiruvananthapuram from December 2 to 15. The bilateral drill continues to serve as a cornerstone of the nations’ strategic partnership, reinforcing collaborative efforts toward maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
Training Focus on CI/CT and Diverse Operational Terrain
This year’s exercise places strong emphasis on counterinsurgency (CI) and counterterrorism (CT) operations. Personnel from the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Forces are undergoing joint training in semi-urban zones, dense jungle settings and coastal environments—terrain reflective of real-world operational challenges in the wider region. Incorporation of modern defence technologies and simulation-based components enhances training effectiveness.
Interoperability and Shared Professional Expertise
Ekuverin 2025 aims to deepen interoperability through integrated tactical drills, coordinated mission planning and mutual sharing of operational best practices. Cross-training modules help both forces refine standard operating procedures and improve combined response mechanisms. The engagement also strengthens camaraderie, a defining feature of this long-standing partnership.
Broader Defence Cooperation Between India and Maldives
Meaning “friends” in Dhivehi, Ekuverin alternates between the two nations and forms part of a broader defence collaboration framework. Alongside exercises such as Ekatha and the trilateral maritime drill Dosti with Sri Lanka, Ekuverin reflects the deep historical ties rooted in cultural, economic and security linkages.
