India launches National Water Security Programme to propel rural development

Rural Water Security.

The Government of India has introduced national initiative on water security which is a flagship project that will conserve water and give people living in rural areas power to earn a living. Its launch in New Delhi at the hands of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil speaks to the increased urgency not only in working on India water problems.

Specific Finance in MGNREGA.

Another significant aspect of the programme is that it is interconnected with funding of MGNREGA funds. In an attempt to prioritize on water resources, 65% of funds on over-exploited and critical rural blocks will henceforth be channelled towards water conservation exercise. At semi-critical blocks, they will be dispersed 40 percent so that there will be systematic investment in getting water supply where the need is greatest.

Basic Conservation Actions.

Some of the activities that are supported by the initiative include rainwater harvesting, groundwater replenishment, watershed management, and sustainable irrigation activities. These steps enhance Water security in agriculture as well as livestock availability besides enhancing resiliency to climate change and repetitive droughts in susceptible regions.

Multi-Dimensional Benefits

The programme is advantageous in a variety of ways by combining water security and providing employment programmes. It also gives farmers confidence in water usage to crop produce, rural populations experience better living standards and the ecosystem receives a restored ecological order. Notably the emphasis on sustainability is such that the generations to come will be blessed with improved natural resources.

Government dedication to Water Priority.

The Jal Shakti Minister emphasized the fact that the water conservation has always been on the agenda of governance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This new effort can be seen as an extension of previous policies, but increasing the effort of integrating water management into the daily life of rural development.

Having a better Future.

The National Initiative on Water Security is a bold step in the direction of resilient agriculture, healthy communities and balanced ecosystems. Through conservation and the creation of livelihood, India is headed in the right direction to ensure that its rural economy and environment are secured together. It heralds a new way of treating water as a national strategic resource--shared prosperity and sustainability.
