SJVN Reviews Progress of 900 MW Arun-3 Hydropower Project in Nepal

India–Nepal Clean Energy Cooperation Strengthened Through Arun-3

Senior officials of SJVN Ltd carried out a detailed review of the 900 MW Arun-3 Hydroelectric Project in Nepal, reaffirming India’s long-term commitment to cross-border renewable energy cooperation. The review was led by Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta , accompanied by Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma , who visited key project locations to assess construction progress, safety standards and operational challenges in the Himalayan region.

Inspection of Dam Construction at Phaksinda
The SJVN leadership inspected the dam site at Phaksinda , where multiple critical construction activities are in progress. The CMD reviewed the pace of work and emphasised strict adherence to safety norms, quality benchmarks and approved timelines. He noted that Arun-3 is a strategically important hydropower project for both India and Nepal, requiring sustained monitoring and disciplined execution under challenging geographical conditions.

Powerhouse and Infrastructure Review at Pukhuwa
The delegation also visited the powerhouse and associated infrastructure facilities at Pukhuwa . Project officials briefed the leadership on achieved milestones, logistical constraints and mitigation strategies adopted to manage difficult terrain, monsoon conditions and weather-related disruptions. The CMD appreciated the efforts of engineers and workers operating in demanding environments and urged teams to maintain construction momentum to meet future targets.

Strategic and Regional Significance
Highlighting the broader importance of Arun-3, Bhupender Gupta described the project as a landmark example of India–Nepal clean energy collaboration . Once commissioned, it is expected to significantly enhance regional energy security and support sustainable economic growth by adding large-scale renewable power capacity. Ajay Kumar Sharma echoed these views, stressing the importance of a strong safety culture, teamwork and discipline across all project phases.

Role in Bilateral Energy Cooperation
The Arun-3 project is being implemented by SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SAPDC) , a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The project will harness the hydropower potential of the Arun River Basin , reduce reliance on fossil fuels and reinforce hydropower as a cornerstone of India–Nepal energy ties.
