Darjeeling Mandarin Orange Secures GI Tag for Regional Authenticity
The renowned Darjeeling Mandarin Orange , prized for its sweetness, aroma and long-standing cultural heritage, has officially been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status . The certification, approved on 24 November 2025 , reinforces the fruit’s identity as a distinctive produce of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills. Originally proposed in 2022, the application underwent multiple rounds of scrutiny before receiving final recognition.
Community-Led GI Application Process
The initiative was spearheaded by former UBKV professor Tulsi Saran Ghimiray , with technical assistance from the Patent Information Centre under the West Bengal Department of Science & Technology. To ensure the economic benefits flow directly to cultivators, the application’s ownership was later transferred to the Darjeeling Organic Farmers Producer Organisation, Mirik . The GI Journal published the application in its July 2025 (Volume 206) edition.
Historic and Economic Importance
Historically, the Darjeeling and Kalimpong region produced nearly 15,000 metric tonnes of this citrus variety. Highly sought-after in European markets, the fruit enjoyed strong export demand. However, productivity declined over the past decade and a half due to viral infections and pest infestations. The newly attained GI tag is expected to revitalise the sector by enhancing branding, ensuring authenticity and improving market competitiveness.
Benefits for Local Growers and Regional Identity
Farmers regard the GI status as a validation of the region’s agricultural heritage. The recognition is anticipated to boost orchard rejuvenation efforts, attract investment and strengthen livelihoods. With this, Darjeeling Mandarin joins 11 agricultural and horticultural GI products from West Bengal, beginning with world-famous Darjeeling Tea.
