Indian Navy to Commission Survey Vessel ‘Ikshak’ at Kochi on November 6

 

  • The Indian Navy will commission its indigenously built Survey Vessel (Large) ‘Ikshak’ at Naval Base Kochi on November 6, 2025 . The ceremony will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi , Chief of the Naval Staff. ‘Ikshak’ is the third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) series, marking another step forward in India’s self-reliant shipbuilding and hydrographic capabilities .

Indigenous Construction

  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata , the vessel was developed under the supervision of the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata) . With over 80% indigenous content , ‘Ikshak’ showcases successful collaboration between GRSE and Indian MSMEs, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Design and Capabilities

  • ‘Ikshak’ is designed for hydrographic survey operations , including charting coastal waters, ports, and sea routes for safe navigation. It is equipped with advanced echo sounders, side-scan sonars, and modern positioning systems for high-precision mapping. The ship can also perform limited defence and research operations , enhancing its versatility.

Dual Role Function

  • Beyond survey duties, ‘Ikshak’ can serve as a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) vessel and as a Hospital Ship during emergencies, supporting medical and evacuation missions in coastal and island areas.
