Nagaland Unveils Mission Watershed Punarutthan at State-Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025
Nagaland launched the State-Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025 along with Mission Watershed Punarutthan at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima, marking a major step toward improving rural water security and ecological resilience. The programme emphasises restoring traditional water sources, rejuvenating degraded landscapes and strengthening local water-harvesting systems through community-led action.
Mission Goals: Reviving Springs and Ensuring Water Security
Mission Watershed Punarutthan aims to ensure long-term water availability in rural settlements by reviving natural springs, reinforcing watershed structures and expanding small-scale irrigation potential. The initiative promotes community stewardship, with MGNREGA and other flagship schemes supporting livelihood opportunities tied to environmental restoration.
Government Vision and Community-Led Conservation
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications stressed that water security is a national priority. He noted that Nagaland’s tradition of community conservation gives the state a strong foundation for watershed revival. Restoring natural resources, he said, is essential for climate resilience and sustainable development.
Progress Under PMKSY in Nagaland
Implementation momentum has grown under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). Nagaland has secured approval for 14 watershed projects with a total sanction of ₹140 crore, of which ₹80 crore has already been released.
