Cyrtodactylus vanarakshaka-Assam Gekko Species

In the montane forests of the Dima Hasao district of Assam, a new species Cyrtodactylus vanarakshaka has been found. The species resides on the slopes of Jatinga in the Barail Hills and contributes to the rich biodiversity of the area and provokes the necessity of the forest preservation.

Discovery and Naming

The species is part of a group of highly endemic Cyrtodactylus khasiensis. It is named vanarakshaka (Sanskrit: forest protector) to commemorate the Assam Forest Department, and the frontline employees in their work in preserving wildlife.

Identification

Morphological characteristics were also used to verify the species, and molecular analysis helped researchers distinguish this species among similar group geckos.

Habitat and Ecology

The gecko lives in the ecological transition zone of the Barail Hills montane forests, which is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Its presence is an indicator of the ecological well being and conservation of such habitats.

Conservation Significance

Repugnant reptiles such as Cyrtodactylus vanarakshaka are also important to sustaining ecological balance though they are neglected. The finding highlights the importance of further field surveys, ecosystem conservation, and the identification of forest ecosystems in Assam.

About Geckos

Geckos are small reptiles that live in all parts of the world (except Antarctica), and live in diversified environments including rainforests, deserts, and mountains. They are mostly nocturnal and play a role of key indicators of environmental health and belong to six families.
