India Launches Rs720-Crore Quantum Fabrication Hubs Under National Quantum Mission

India to Establish Four Quantum Fabrication Hubs Worth Rs720 Crore

In a major push towards quantum research leadership, the Government of India has announced the creation of four state-of-the-art quantum fabrication and central research hubs , collectively valued at ₹720 crore . The facilities — to be set up at IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bengaluru — fall under the National Quantum Mission , designed to accelerate India’s journey in next-generation computing, communication and sensing technologies.

These hubs will build a strong hardware foundation for quantum devices and materials, providing researchers with resources to manufacture, test and scale quantum components. Under the mission, access will extend not only to internal scientific teams, but also to startups, industry, universities and national strategic sectors , laying the groundwork for broad-based innovation.

Institution-Specific Mandates and Technological Focus

Each institution will serve as a leadership node within the mission.

  • IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur will spearhead national infrastructure for quantum sensing and metrology , enabling breakthroughs in ultra-precision measurement.

  • IISc Bengaluru , in coordination with IIT Bombay, will specialize in quantum computing fabrication , focusing on superconducting, spin-based and photonic qubit platforms.

  • IIT Delhi will anchor advancements in quantum materials, device engineering and fabrication frameworks .

The initiative also builds upon India’s rising deep-tech startup ecosystem. IIT Bombay’s Technology Innovation Hub is cited as a successful model — already supporting 96 R&D projects and over 50 quantum–related startups valued at ₹466 crore . Officials believe these new hubs will strengthen indigenous hardware development, reducing dependency on global suppliers over time.
