Indian Navy Officers Win Youth Icon Award for Historic Global Circumnavigation

Youth Icon Award Celebrates Indian Navy’s Historic 250-Day Circumnavigation

Two Indian Navy officers have earned national recognition after completing a pioneering global sailing expedition, culminating in the Youth Icon Award at Indian of the Year 2025 . Their achievement demonstrates not only professional excellence but also the expanding representation of women in maritime roles and uniformed services.

INSV Tarini’s 25,000+ Nautical Mile Global Expedition

The officers undertook a 250-day circumnavigation aboard INSV Tarini as part of Navika Sagar Parikarma II , navigating independently across the world’s oceans in a double-handed format . This marked the first Indian duo to sail around the globe with only two crew members , pushing the limits of endurance, seamanship, and strategic oceanic navigation. Their route spanned the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific waters, covering more than 25,400 nautical miles .

Training, Ocean Challenges and Mission Execution

The circumnavigation followed three years of preparation, including survival drills, meteorology, rigging skills, and long-distance endurance training. The officers spoke of the challenge posed by isolation on the Pacific stretch, where they sailed for weeks without sighting land or vessels. Mastery of equipment, constant weather monitoring, and coordinated decision-making were essential for maintaining course in storms and unpredictable sea states.

National Appreciation and Global Maritime Pride

The expedition team was felicitated at a national ceremony attended by defence leadership and distinguished civilian dignitaries. The mission has been praised for advancing India’s stature in global ocean sailing, while reflecting the rising capability and confidence of women naval professionals.
