India and Netherlands Expand Cooperation on Green Hydrogen

India and the Netherlands have advanced their clean energy engagement by introducing the India–Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Programme alongside a new academic collaboration framework focused on green hydrogen innovation. The move reflects a shared intent to accelerate technology development, strengthen research capacity, and support the global shift toward low-carbon energy systems.


Fellowship Programme to Build Skilled Hydrogen Workforce

The fellowship initiative was inaugurated by Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology. Designed as a national capacity-building effort, it is open to Indian PhD scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members from accredited institutions. Selected fellows will gain hands-on exposure to the Netherlands’ mature hydrogen ecosystem, including research labs, industrial clusters, and port-linked energy infrastructure, with the objective of enhancing India’s technical readiness for large-scale hydrogen adoption.


Priority Research Domains and Technology Translation

The programme emphasises applied research areas that can directly support deployment pathways in India. These include hydrogen system integration, safety and regulatory standards, techno-economic feasibility, life-cycle emissions assessment, and localisation of critical components. The structure is intended to ensure that outcomes move beyond academic publication toward demonstrable solutions for sectors where decarbonisation is particularly challenging, such as heavy industry and long-distance transport.


Institutional Partnership Between Dutch and Indian Academia

Alongside the fellowship, a Memorandum of Understanding was formalised between the University of Groningen and a consortium of 19 Indian Institutes of Technology. The agreement establishes a durable platform for joint research projects, faculty exchanges, doctoral supervision, and coordinated knowledge transfer in hydrogen and allied green energy domains. The arrangement creates collaboration channels without mandating immediate financial outlays, enabling flexible project design based on mutual priorities.


Alignment With National and Global Energy Transitions

Officials from both countries highlighted that the initiative complements India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Energy Independence 2047 vision, and the long-term Net-Zero 2070 commitment. Dutch representatives reiterated their country’s experience in port-based hydrogen logistics and infrastructure development. The combined academic and capacity-building measures are expected to deepen Indo-Dutch cooperation while cultivating specialised human capital for the emerging global hydrogen economy.
