India has taken over as Vice Chair of the Kimberley Process from December 25 and is set to assume the Chairpersonship from January 1 next year , marking a notable milestone in its engagement with international trade governance. The development reflects India’s rising stature in shaping ethical, transparent and rule-based frameworks, particularly in the global diamond industry.

Understanding the Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process (KP) is a unique tripartite international initiative involving governments, the diamond industry and civil society organisations . It was launched in 2003 to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds , also known as blood diamonds, which are mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against legitimate governments. Over time, the KP has evolved into the most comprehensive global mechanism regulating the rough diamond trade.

Why India’s role matters

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India’s elevation to the Vice Chair reflects global confidence in the country’s commitment to integrity, transparency and responsible trade practices . As one of the world’s largest centres for diamond cutting and polishing, India plays a pivotal role in the global diamond value chain. Its leadership position signals recognition of its ability to balance commercial interests with ethical responsibilities.

Agenda as Vice Chair and Chair

During its tenure as Vice Chair in 2025 and Chair in 2026 , India will work closely with all KP participants and observers to strengthen rule-based compliance and institutional credibility . Key priorities include making the Kimberley Process more inclusive, effective and responsive to evolving global expectations around ethical sourcing, sustainability and human rights.

Global significance of the process

Currently comprising 60 participants , the Kimberley Process accounts for over 99 per cent of global rough diamond trade . India’s leadership is expected to support ongoing reforms, reinforce enforcement mechanisms and enhance trust across the international diamond supply chain.
