The National Highways will be equipped with QR Code Signboards by NHAI


1. Initiative Overview

  • Published by: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
  • Announcement Date: October 3, 2025.
  • Purpose: To enhance the concept of digital transformation, transparency, and convenience of the commuters in the National Highways by using smart and technology-driven infrastructure.

2. Major Characteristics of the QR Code Signboards.

The vertical sign boards will give one access to two types of urgent information at a glance:

  • Project & Contact Details:
    • Chainage (location marker) and national highway number.
    • Highway patrol, Toll Manager and Resident Engineer contact numbers.
    • Immediate assistance emergence number is 1033.
    • Construction, project and maintenance schedules of transparency.
  • Facilities of Commuters & Instructions:
    • Guidelines and proximity to the surrounding amenities such as hospitals, petrol stations, restaurants, police and vehicle repair shops.
    • Position of e-charging positions, truck lay-byes, and public toilets.
    • Distance to the next toll plaza.

3. Strategic Implementation

  • Installation Sites: QR code boards will be installed in high visibility locations where:
  • Service stations, parking lots, and toll stations.
  • Highway start and end points.
  • Truck lay-byes and key standing signboards.

4. Expected Impact

  • Increased Road Safety: The communication and accessibility of the emergency will be increased, thus providing faster response.
  • Improved User Experience: Has all the critical travel information in one scannable code, which enhances on-road preparedness.
  • Greater Transparency: Provides straightforward project information and contact channels to ensure accountability and open monitoring to the community.
