Researchers have verified that there is a newly found deep sea coral species Iridogorgia chewbacca that was discovered in the tropical western Pacific Ocean. The coral derives its strange name because it looks like the favorite Star Wars character Chewbacca, whom has a tall body and shaggy fur.
Between Discovery and Observation.
The coral was unknown to scientists years after it was first discovered in 2006. It was not recognised as a separate species until a considerable amount of research was conducted; genetic tests and particular morphological analysis. This discovery was made by the effort of Les Watling a professor emeritus at the University of Hawai`i Manoa, as he considered the Chinese research and relied on his experience with the same corals in Hawaii waters and the research led by NOAA.
Distinctive Features
The coral is very striking to sight. It is a tall and erect plant growing out at the base of the seabed, and has long and curvy branches which have a smooth, light reflecting surface. The hairs of its branches make it appear furry, which is highly reminiscent of the iconic furry coat of Chewbacca. This distinct physical structure was one that contrasted other species of Iridogorgia genus.
Why It Matters
The description of confirmation of Iridogorgia chewbacca emphasizes the extent to which little can be said about the life in the deep ocean. New species are still being reported proving the sheer abundance of the marine ecosystems even after decades of research. Every discovery is guiding the scientists to get a better idea about the ecological functions of the deep-sea life and to provide more arguments about the need to preserve the delicate ocean environments. The publication of the description of the species in the journal Zootaxa guarantees its popularity in the scientific community.
Pop Culture Meets Science
By calling the coral a Star Wars character, scientists have made a cultural connection between science and society. Not only does such naming render discoveries easier to connect with, but it also causes curiosity and the population to become interested in marine biology. Such a strategy can make people more willing to support conservation efforts in the ocean.
Developing the Map of Biodiversity.
Iridogorgia chewbacca is found in the tropical western Pacific, and adds to the already varied marine organisms found in the area. The discovery of it shows that there is the need to keep on exploring the deep sea and serves as a reminder that there is still a lot of the ocean still there to explore and that it is full of surprises.
