IMD Issues Cyclone Alert for Andaman and Nicobar Islands Amid Intensifying System

Cyclone Alert Issued as Andaman Islands Prepare for Intense Rainfall

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been placed on high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the development of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The system, expected to intensify over the next few days, may bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and hazardous marine conditions, prompting warnings to residents, fishermen and tourists across the archipelago.

Cyclonic System Likely to Strengthen

The IMD noted that the circulation is expected to gain strength starting November 21 , leading to heavy to very heavy downpours over Nicobar Island . Andaman Island is also likely to see widespread rainfall. Between November 24 and 25 , several regions may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, increasing the risk of localized flooding and travel disruptions.

Strong Winds and Rough Sea Conditions

Surface wind speeds over the Andaman Sea are forecast to reach 35–45 kmph , with gusts up to 55 kmph as the system intensifies. The sea is expected to become rough to very rough, prompting local ports to issue Cautionary Signal No. 3 , indicating the presence of strong winds in coastal and harbour areas.

Fishing Restrictions and Impact on Ferry Services

Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until November 23 . Squally weather may also affect inter-island and mainland ferry services, leading to possible delays or cancellations. Tourists and boat operators have been urged to maintain strict vigilance and follow official advisories.

Administrative Readiness

The local administration has instructed all transport and tourism stakeholders to prioritize safety. Vehicle and passenger ferries may face sudden suspensions depending on weather conditions. Officials emphasised that preparedness measures are being intensified as the region braces for worsening weather.

Exam Point

  • IMD issues cyclone alerts for developing low-pressure or cyclonic systems.

  • Cautionary Signal-3 indicates strong coastal winds near ports.
