Thailand Formally Signals BRICS Membership Interest, Seeks India’s Support for 2026
Thailand has officially expressed its aspiration to join BRICS , positioning itself among the growing number of nations seeking to align with the grouping’s expanding geo-economic influence. The announcement was made during Thailand’s National Day reception in New Delhi, where Bangkok conveyed its intention to work closely with India as the country prepares to chair the BRICS Summit in 2026 .
Thailand’s Bid to Join BRICS
Thai Ambassador Chavanart Thangsumphant stated that Bangkok views BRICS as a significant platform for inclusive multilateralism , equitable economic governance and strengthened South–South cooperation. She emphasised that support from India — a founding member of BRICS — would be crucial for Thailand’s membership prospects, particularly as the group continues to draw interest from emerging economies.
Advancing India–Thailand Strategic Partnership
India and Thailand elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2024 , following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit earlier in the year. The ambassador highlighted the deep civilisational and cultural connect between the two countries and reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to closer regional collaboration under the Indo-Pacific framework.
High-Level Engagements Highlight Maritime & Economic Convergence
The recent visit of Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow further strengthened cooperation in trade, connectivity, maritime security and regional diplomacy. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar described Thailand as an “important maritime neighbour”, signalling growing strategic synergy. Thailand formally raised the BRICS membership topic during these high-level discussions.
