- The Border Security Force (BSF) is now training 150 native dogs of the breeds Rampur Hound and Mudhol Hound to be used in border guard duties, counterinsurgency as well as special operations. The relocation helps the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat vision of the government and advances the native canine India culture.
Can Indian Breeds restore our National Security?
- The project is based on the request of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020 in his Mann Ki Baat, where he urged people to adopt Indian dog breeds. Mudhol Hound, which was complimented by the Prime Minister in his speech in Bagalkot, and the Rampur Hound due to its strength and stamina are being trained to perform at the high-level security services.
The Mudhol Hound:
- The Mudhol Hound originated in the Deccan Plateau of Karnataka, being known by speed, stamina, and being a sharp hunter. Known to the British as the Caravan Hound, the first version of the device was trialled by the RVC of the Indian Army in Meerut (2016). The breed also works better in warmer areas and has been effective in patrol and surveillance.
The Rampur Hound:
- The breed, which is regal, loyal and enduring, was bred some 300 years ago by the Nawabs of Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) by the cross-breeding of Afghan and English greyhounds. Rampur Hounds, which had a speed of over 40 mph, were once used as royal hunting dogs but they are now being reintroduced in security and patrol.

- Breeds that are prized due to their ability to withstand heat, endurance and low maintenance.
Significance:
- Whereas the world depends on Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds as well as Labradors, the fact that India opted to use indigenous breeds marks one of the greatest changes in favour of an indigenous defence force. The BSF program emphasizes the increased belief in Indian resources that the country has in Indian terrain and climate.
