IGI Becomes India’s First Water-Positive Airport
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) has become the first water-positive airport in India among facilities handling over 40 million passengers annually , marking a major milestone in sustainable aviation infrastructure. The certification, awarded during the Water Innovation Summit 2025 , underscores IGI’s commitment to responsible resource management and climate-resilient operations.
Understanding the Water-Positive Achievement
A water-positive airport replenishes more freshwater than it consumes. IGI achieved this status by significantly enhancing water conservation, recycling and recharge mechanisms across its vast premises. The milestone aligns with the NITI Aayog–CII water neutrality framework , which encourages large institutions to adopt measurable water stewardship practices.
Infrastructure Supporting Water Replenishment
IGI has installed 625 rainwater harvesting structures , enabling substantial groundwater recharge throughout the year. To further strengthen water security, the airport constructed two new underground reservoirs with a combined capacity of 9 million litres , ensuring adequate storage during dry seasons.
A major contributor to IGI’s water-positive performance is its 16.6 MLD zero-liquid-discharge sewage treatment plant , which treats and recycles wastewater for non-potable use.
Innovative Reuse Systems and Smart Water Management
Recycled water is extensively utilised for HVAC systems, landscaping and toilet flushing , reducing reliance on external water sources. Automated systems—such as drip irrigation networks, moisture-sensitive sprinklers and digital monitoring tools—enhance efficiency and minimise wastage. Additionally, IGI operates a dedicated treatment unit to maintain safe and high-quality potable water for passengers and staff.
