India Re-Elected to IMO Council as Category (b) Member for 2026–27
India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–27 term, reaffirming its influential role in global maritime governance. The election, held during the 34th IMO Assembly Session in London , saw India secure 154 out of 169 valid votes , demonstrating strong international confidence in its maritime leadership.
India’s Position in the IMO Council
India continues as a Category (b) member , a classification reserved for nations with the highest stakes in international seaborne trade. Other members in this category include France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UAE. The IMO Council also comprises nations that provide major maritime services and countries elected for special strategic considerations.
Importance of the Re-Election
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India’s re-election reflects global recognition of its expanding maritime capabilities and its commitment to safe, secure and environmentally responsible shipping. As a long-standing supporter of maritime cooperation, particularly among developing nations, India’s presence in the Council strengthens its ability to shape international maritime policies—especially those related to safety regulations, security frameworks and pollution control.
Strategic Maritime Outlook
The government highlighted the significance of Vision MAHASAGAR , which extends the earlier SAGAR doctrine to a broader global scope. This vision aligns with national initiatives such as Maritime Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047 , which seek to modernise port infrastructure, expand shipping capacity and reinforce India’s global maritime partnerships.
