India-Canada Sign Energy Cooperation Pact at India Energy Week 2026

India–Canada Energy Cooperation Gets Fresh Impetus

India and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector by signing a Joint Statement on Energy Cooperation on the sidelines of India Energy Week 2026 in Goa. The agreement reflects renewed momentum in ties as both countries seek to strengthen collaboration across conventional fuels and emerging clean energy technologies.

High-Level Engagement and Strategic Reset

The Joint Statement was finalised after a bilateral meeting between the energy ministers of India and Canada . Notably, this marked the first-ever participation of a Canadian Cabinet Minister at India Energy Week, underlining Ottawa’s growing interest in energy engagement with India. The meeting followed directions issued by the Prime Ministers of both countries during their interaction on the margins of the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Canada, in June 2025, signalling a political intent to re-engage at senior levels.

Revival of the Ministerial Energy Dialogue

A key outcome of the meeting was the formal revival of the India–Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue. Both sides stressed that the dialogue would serve as a structured platform for regular government-to-government engagement, with a focus on energy security, diversification of supply chains, and long-term stability in energy partnerships. The mechanism is also expected to facilitate stronger commercial linkages between Indian and Canadian energy companies.

Trade Opportunities in Conventional Energy

Acknowledging the complementary nature of their energy sectors, Canada highlighted its ambition to emerge as a global energy powerhouse in both clean and conventional fuels. This includes expanding liquefied natural gas capacity, increasing crude oil exports to Asia through the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, and scaling up LPG exports from its west coast. India, currently the world’s third-largest oil consumer and fourth-largest LNG importer, is projected to account for more than one-third of global energy demand growth over the next two decades. Both sides agreed to explore deeper trade in LNG, LPG and crude oil, along with opportunities for Indian exports of refined petroleum products to Canada.

Important Facts for Exams

Clean Energy and Climate Cooperation

The Joint Statement also underscored shared climate and sustainability objectives. Areas identified for cooperation include emission reduction in conventional energy systems through carbon capture, utilisation and storage, renewable energy deployment, hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, battery storage, critical minerals, electricity systems, energy supply chain resilience, and the application of artificial intelligence in the energy sector. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue, business-to-business partnerships, and multilateral cooperation to advance global climate goals.
