Telangana Clears Bill to Safeguard Gig and Platform Workers
Telangana has taken a pioneering step in labour rights by approving a comprehensive bill aimed at securing the welfare of gig and platform workers. The proposed Telangana Gig and Platform Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025 seeks to formalise protections for workers associated with food delivery, ride-hailing, logistics and e-commerce platforms—one of the fastest-growing employment sectors in the state.
Structured Registration and Social Security Framework
A core feature of the bill is the mandatory registration of all gig and platform workers with a dedicated state-level board. This body will include representatives from the government, platform companies, and worker associations. The framework aims to provide formal recognition to workers who have traditionally remained outside conventional labour laws.
Creation of a Welfare Fund and Redressal System
The legislation establishes a Welfare Fund , which will finance social security benefits, insurance schemes, emergency support and safety initiatives. A formal grievance redressal mechanism will allow workers to submit complaints related to pay issues, unfair practices, or safety concerns. Companies will be required to appoint a liaison officer to coordinate with the board and ensure compliance.
Support from Worker Unions
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union welcomed the state’s move, describing it as an essential step toward fair working conditions. The union emphasised that delivery workers, cab drivers and riders—often facing income volatility and safety risks—will benefit significantly from institutional protection.
