Karnataka Launches KEO, an Affordable AI-Ready Personal Computer
Karnataka has launched KEO , a compact, low-cost, AI-ready personal computer developed in collaboration with KEONICS to strengthen digital inclusion and ensure wider access to computing devices. The initiative comes as the State highlights persistent gaps in computer ownership, with fewer than 10% of Indian households possessing a PC—a barrier that restricts digital learning, skilling, and employment opportunities.
Bridging the Digital Divide
KEO has been designed as an entry-level yet powerful device aimed at households, students, libraries, and public institutions. Karnataka observed that lack of computer access remains a strong contributor to student dropout levels, especially in rural and economically weaker communities. The new device is expected to broaden access to digital education and support the State’s tech-driven development model.
RISC-V Architecture and AI Features
Built on a 64-bit quad-core RISC-V processor , KEO runs on a lightweight, Linux-based OS. It is equipped with 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-A/USB-C ports, HDMI output, audio interfaces , and more. Its standout feature is the on-device AI core providing 4–5 TOPS of processing capability, enabling AI applications even without internet connectivity.
The device comes preloaded with BUDDH , an AI learning assistant trained on the DSERT syllabus , designed to help students in low-connectivity regions with curriculum-aligned guidance.
Multi-Sector Applications
Beyond education, KEO can support government offices, health centres, police stations, and panchayat libraries through documentation tasks, web services, programming, and basic automation. The State plans phased deployment across schools and community institutions, with KEONICS managing distribution.
