National Agriculture Code Overview

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is at present working on a National Agriculture Code (NAC). For agriculture, this is similar to the current national codes for electrical systems and structures. In India, where there are currently no nationwide regulations governing such practice, the aim is to establish a set of standards which can help by improving the quality and efficiency of some farming practices.

Interpreting the National Agricultural Code (NAC)

  • NAC stands for National Agricultural Policy - A policy to standardise agriculture all over India.
  • It is to maximize farming methods in an efficient, safe, and quality manner.
  • Shortcomings of such vagueness inside these above areas as land-filling, irrigation planting areas, technique of water/solid, and sustainable farming are one of the factors necessitating coordinated approach.
  • Agricultural Processes, Post-Harvest Operations, Input Management, New Farming Methods will be covered in the NAC.
  • The NAC has the following primary objectives: a national framework, the encouragement of quality in Indian agriculture, the guidance of farmers and the adoption of modern agricultural techniques.
  • The BIS drafts the NAC, which is likely to be prepared by October 2025.
  • SADFs (Standardized Agriculture Demonstration Farms) will be established by the BIS to prototype and promote the NAC.
