Scientists recently discovered a new species of jumping spider in the lower Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu — Carrhotus piperus. This brings the total number of Carrhotus species in India to 10, with only 37 species known worldwide. This again highlights the huge biodiversity of the area.

- The spider was first recorded in Thadiyankudisai, Dindigul in 2016.
- The spider was from Piper nigrum which is known as black pepper plant.
- The spider is named piperus after the plant it live on
- Unique physical characteristics—i.e. prolateral protrusion and a beak-shaped embolus—makes it part of the Carrhotus genus.
- The finding is identified in the journal Journal of Insect Biodiversity and Systematics.
