Eleven new jumping spider species discovered in Tamil Nadu

Scientists recently discovered a new species of jumping spider in the lower Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu — Carrhotus piperus. This brings the total number of Carrhotus species in India to 10, with only 37 species known worldwide. This again highlights the huge biodiversity of the area.

Running Spider: From Their Natural Habitat.

• The spider was first recorded in Thadiyankudisai, Dindigul in 2016.
• The spider was from Piper nigrum which is known as black pepper plant.
• The spider is named piperus after the plant it live on
• Unique physical characteristics—i.e. prolateral protrusion and a beak-shaped embolus—makes it part of the Carrhotus genus.
• The finding is identified in the journal Journal of Insect Biodiversity and Systematics.
