Codex Finalizes New Spice Standards in Guwahati 

 

  • The 8th Session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH8) held in Guwahati finalized three new global standards for large cardamom, vanilla, and coriander .

  • With this, the total number of spice standards developed by CCSCH has reached 19 .

  • The new standards will improve quality, safety, and uniformity in the global spice trade.

  • These standards are recommended for adoption by the Codex Alimentarius Commission .

India’s Role

  • India hosts the CCSCH, with the Spices Board of India acting as its Secretariat .

  • India, being a major producer and exporter of large cardamom and coriander , will benefit from harmonized global benchmarks that enhance export competitiveness .

About Codex Alimentarius Commission

  • A joint body of the FAO and WHO , it sets global food standards and guidelines to ensure consumer safety and fair trade practices .

International Participation

  • The session saw participation from 30 countries , reflecting global cooperation on science-based, harmonized standards for the spice sector.

Significance:
The finalized standards strengthen India’s leadership in the global spice trade and promote consistent quality, traceability, and fair trade in the international spice market.
