New SARS-CoV-2 Variant XFG

The introduction of the XFG strain of SARS-CoV-2 has aroused worries in India. As of June 2025, 163 instances have been documented, predominantly in Maharashtra. The overall number of active COVID-19 cases in India is at 6,815, with three fatalities documented in the previous 24 hours. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium has validated the existence of this novel mutation.

Concerning the XFG Variant
It is a recombinant strain, the XFG variety. It is the product of LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, two previous strains, combining. Four spike protein mutations are present in this variation. Since it was first discovered in Canada, it has rapidly spread over the world. The Omicron sub-variant is the ancestor of the variation.

Distribution by Region
With 89 instances, Maharashtra has reported the most. Tamil Nadu (16), Kerala (15), Gujarat (11), and Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal (six apiece) are other states with noteworthy instances. Telangana has also acknowledged a fresh case.

Clinical Features
The upper respiratory symptoms of the XFG variety seem to be modest. This is especially true for those who have had vaccinations or who have previously contracted COVID-19. According to current statistics, COVID is responsible for 66% of respiratory viral infections in India. Even among people at high risk, hospitalization rates are still modest.

In contrast to the JN.1 variant
The JN.1 variation, a sub-lineage of Omicron BA.2.86, is not the same as the XFG variety. An increase in incidence across Asia has been attributed to the JN.1 variant. It has been found in a number of nations and has around 30 mutations. JN.1 has been designated as a variation of interest by the WHO, however XFG has not yet received this classification.

Government Reaction
The Union Health Ministry is evaluating readiness via simulated exercises in response to the increase in cases. States have been directed to make sure that oxygen, isolation beds, and necessary medications are available. The majority of minor cases are treated at home. Severe acute respiratory diseases and influenza-like illnesses are being intensively watched by surveillance teams.

Current Statistics on COVID-19
Since January 2025, India has recorded 65 fatalities in total. Only 257 instances were recorded in late May, indicating a reduced number of active individuals. To follow the variant's dissemination, genome sequencing of positive samples and ongoing surveillance are under progress.
