Who Is Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi?

Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi became the Prime Minister of Iraq on 14 May 2026. His swearing-in happened in front of Iraq’s Parliament, called the Council of Representatives. On 16 May, PM Modi officially congratulated him. This shows India’s interest in maintaining good relations with Iraq.

Iraq’s Political System

Iraq is a federal parliamentary republic. It is located in West Asia. The country has two main leaders:

  • Prime Minister:  Head of government. He runs the country’s daily affairs and forms the cabinet.

  • President:  Head of state. He represents the country in ceremonial matters.

Iraq’s legislature is called the  Council of Representatives . It has only one house (unicameral). This body plays a big role in forming the government.

How Was the New Government Formed?

On 14 May 2026, the Iraqi Parliament approved a partial cabinet. This cabinet had 14 ministers. Lawmakers also approved the government’s work programme. However, votes on some remaining ministers were delayed. This happened because political groups were still negotiating.

Forming a cabinet in Iraq is often difficult. Different political blocs have to bargain and reach agreements. This time was no different.

Role of the Coordination Framework

The  Coordination Framework  is a powerful alliance of Shia political parties in Iraq. This group nominated Al-Zaidi in April 2026. The nomination came after weeks of political deadlock. Leaders held internal discussions. They also met in Baghdad at the home of Falih al-Fayyad. He is the leader of the Popular Mobilisation Forces. This nomination finally broke the stalemate.
