India has significantly upgraded its military readiness in eastern Ladakh with the operationalisation of the Mudh-Nyoma airbase , one of the world’s highest advanced landing facilities. The inauguration, marked by the landing of a C-130J Super Hercules , underscores a major boost in rapid-response capability along the sensitive Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Strategic Advantage at Extremely High Altitude
Located at an elevation of about 13,700 feet and just 25 km from the LAC , Mudh-Nyoma offers a critical forward-operational position for the Indian Air Force. Its placement allows faster troop deployment, logistics movement and surveillance operations in a region that has held heightened strategic significance since the Galwan Valley clash of 2020 .
The high-altitude terrain poses significant operational challenges; therefore, having a capable airbase at this elevation is essential for sustaining air operations in harsh and unpredictable Himalayan conditions.
Construction Achieved Under Severe Climatic Constraints
The ₹218-crore project was executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in a highly restricted construction window due to extreme winter temperatures and limited workable months. Despite these obstacles, the runway was completed within a year of the foundation being laid in 2023, reflecting accelerated infrastructure development in a critical military zone.
Enhanced IAF Capability in Ladakh
The new runway can support fighter jets, heavy-lift aircraft and helicopters , making it a major force-multiplier for the IAF. Mudh-Nyoma becomes Ladakh’s fourth major airbase , complementing Leh, Kargil and Thoise. Its altitude places it between the Kargil airstrip and Daulat Beg Oldi , the world’s highest operational airstrip.
Improving Civilian Connectivity
Beyond defence, the airbase is expected to improve access to remote settlements like Hanle, Loma and Nyoma , supporting tourism, emergency services and regional development initiatives.
