Kerala Opens India First Private Medical Museum in Thiruvananthapuram

Overview

On 25 May 2026, Kerala got its first private medical museum in Ulloor, Thiruvananthapuram. It is also India’s first private medical museum. A. Sivaraman, a former artist-modeler, founded it. The museum displays handcrafted anatomical models, embryology charts, and old teaching materials.

A New Home for Medical History

On 25 May 2026, a very special museum opened its doors in Ulloor, Thiruvananthapuram. It is called the Museum of Medical Archives. This is Kerala’s first private medical museum. It is also India’s first private medical museum. The museum is not like a normal art or history museum. It displays things that help teach medicine. You can see models of the human body, old charts, and teaching tools that doctors and students have used for decades. The man behind this museum is A. Sivaraman. He worked as an artist-modeler at the Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram. He spent years creating these models with his own hands. Now they are on display for everyone to see and learn from.

What Is a Medical Museum?

A medical museum is a special place. It collects and preserves teaching aids used in medical education. These include anatomical specimens (real body parts preserved for study), models, charts, and archival material. Such museums are used in subjects like anatomy, embryology, pathology, microbiology, and the history of medicine. In a medical museum, students can see three-dimensional structures of the human body. They can understand how organs develop and how diseases change the body. These museums are very important for learning because looking at a real model or specimen is better than just reading a book.

The Museum of Medical Archives: A Dream Come True

The Museum of Medical Archives is the result of one man’s lifelong dedication. A. Sivaraman was an artist-modeler at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. His job was to make models and teaching materials for medical students. Over many years, he created hundreds of handcrafted models. He painted detailed charts. He collected old photographs and microbiological slides. After he retired, he wanted to preserve all this material. So he decided to open a private museum. His son, Dr. S. Abhirami, helped him. The museum is located in Ulloor, a locality in Thiruvananthapuram district. On 25 May 2026, the museum officially opened. It is a small but very valuable place for anyone interested in medicine and science.

What Can You See Inside?

The museum has many fascinating exhibits. All of them were made or collected by A. Sivaraman. Here are some of the things you can see:

  • Handcrafted anatomical models  – These show bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. They are made from materials like clay, wax, and plaster. Each model is painted in realistic colours.

  • Embryological displays  – These show how a baby grows inside the mother’s womb. You can see models of embryos at different stages.

  • Paintings and charts  – Large, hand-painted charts explain complex topics like fetal circulation (how blood flows in an unborn baby), tooth formation, and reproductive anatomy.

  • Microbiology archives  – Old slides and drawings of bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms.

  • Photographs  – Rare black-and-white photos from the early days of medical education in Kerala.
