Election Commission Launches Phase III of Electoral Roll Revision Across India

Overview

The Election Commission of India started Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on 14 May 2026. The exercise covers nearly 36.73 crore voters across 16 States and 3 Union Territories. The process includes door-to-door verification of voter details to update electoral rolls before future elections.


What Is Special Intensive Revision?

Special Intensive Revision, also called SIR, is a large voter verification exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India.

The process includes:

  • House-to-house visits

  • Verification of voter details

  • Correction of records

  • Addition and deletion of names

The aim is to maintain accurate electoral rolls.

Electoral rolls are official lists of eligible voters prepared under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.


States and Union Territories Covered in Phase III

States Included

The following 16 States are covered:

  • Andhra Pradesh , Arunachal Pradesh , Haryana , Punjab

  • Telangana . Karnataka , Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha

  • Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland

  • Sikkim, Tripura

Union Territories Included

The following Union Territories are covered:

  • Chandigarh

  • Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

  • National Capital Territory of Delhi


Field-Level Electoral Verification Process

Booth Level Officers

More than 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers, also called BLOs, will conduct door-to-door visits.

BLOs are field officials connected to specific polling booths.

Their duties include:

  • Verifying voter details

  • Updating records

  • Checking addresses

  • Identifying missing entries
