Bureau of Energy Efficiency Celebrates 25 Years of India’s Energy Conservation Efforts
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), operating under the Ministry of Power, celebrated its 25th Foundation Day at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The event brought together policymakers, representatives from state governments and stakeholders from multiple sectors. Manohar Lal Khattar attended as Chief Guest, while Pankaj Agarwal delivered the keynote address.
Energy Efficiency as a Preventive Approach
During the event, the Minister described energy efficiency as a preventive measure for the power sector. According to him, reducing electricity consumption lowers the requirement for additional generation capacity and cuts emissions. He highlighted that India has reduced the emissions intensity of its GDP by about 36 percent compared with 2005 levels. The country has also achieved around 52 percent non-fossil fuel installed electricity capacity ahead of its 2030 target.
Several major initiatives were highlighted, including the Perform Achieve and Trade Scheme (PAT), Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO), the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency Norms (CAFE), the ADEETIE programme for MSMEs, the Standards and Labelling Programme and the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code.
Energy Efficiency as the ‘First Fuel’
Pankaj Agarwal described energy efficiency as India’s “first fuel,” highlighting its importance for ensuring energy security, affordability and environmental sustainability. He explained that efficiency measures are increasingly important as electricity demand rises with expanding digital infrastructure and technologies such as artificial intelligence.
BEE has also been focusing on areas such as efficient cooling technologies, industrial decarbonisation through carbon markets, improved fuel efficiency in transportation and the creation of dedicated energy efficiency hubs.
Launch of Digital Tools and New Identity
The celebration also included the unveiling of the BEE@25 logo, symbolising the organisation’s journey and commitment to sustainable development. A commemorative video presented the institution’s achievements and partnerships over the past two decades.
Authorities also launched the RCO Portal to improve monitoring and compliance under energy efficiency programmes. Additionally, the BEE Star Label Mobile Application, developed with CLASP, allows consumers to scan QR codes on star-labelled appliances and verify their energy performance ratings.
