World Happiness Report 2026: Finland Tops, Social Media Concerns Rise

Global Happiness Rankings 2026 Highlight Youth Well-being Challenges

The World Happiness Report 2026, released on 18 March, highlights growing concerns over the impact of excessive social media use on youth well-being. Backed by the United Nations, the report also ranks Finland as the happiest nation for the ninth consecutive year.

Global Rankings and Key Trends

Finland continues to lead the rankings, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Costa Rica, and Sweden. Costa Rica’s fourth position marks a record high for a Latin American country. Other nations in the top ten include Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Among 147 countries, India ranked 116th, improving slightly from 118th in 2025. Afghanistan remained the lowest-ranked country, followed by Sierra Leone and Malawi.

Social Media and Youth Well-being

The report identifies a decline in life satisfaction among young people, especially in countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Excessive social media use is highlighted as a key factor, with teenagers—particularly girls—reporting lower well-being when usage exceeds five hours daily. In contrast, limited use of less than one hour per day is associated with higher life satisfaction.

Determinants of Happiness Rankings

The rankings are based on self-reported life evaluations from approximately 100,000 respondents worldwide. Six major indicators are considered: GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. Nordic countries consistently rank high due to strong welfare systems and equitable socio-economic conditions.

Broader Implications and Policy Debate

The findings have intensified global discussions on regulating social media usage, particularly among youth. Policymakers are increasingly focusing on mental health concerns linked to digital overexposure. The report emphasises the need for balanced technology use and informed policy interventions to safeguard well-being.
