On the first of October, every year, October 1 is celebrated worldwide since it is both the International Day of Older Persons and the World Vegetarian Day . Although these two events were not of the same focus, they emphasized significant values in human well-being, social responsibility and sustainable living.
International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons is the day on which the contributions and problems of the elderly population are marked every year on October 1 . The United Nations regards people of the age 60 years and older as older persons . This is a reminder that support to ageing populations should be provided by the policies of inclusiveness, healthcare, and social security.
The celebration dates back to 1982 when world assembly on ageing came up with Vienna international plan of action on ageing. Subsequently in 1990 , the United Nations General Assembly with a resolution of 45/106 proclaimed October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. Ever since its founding in 1991 , it has been employed to raise awareness on topics related to the older population, including the problem of elder abuse, loneliness, and the need to actively age.
World Vegetarian Day
Coupled with it, there is also the World Vegetarian Day on the first of 1October annually. This day highlights the advantages of a vegetarian diet, which does not include meat, poultry, and fish, and emphasizes food items including vegetables, fruits, seeds, tofu, and whole grains. Vegetarians not only preach health-conscious diets but also environmentally-friendly and ethically-driven diets.
It was celebrated in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) and was recognized internationally in 1978 in a statement by the International Vegetarian Union . NAVS suggested that the day was launched so as to raise awareness on the health benefits, moral options, and humanitarian ethic associated with vegetarianism. It also seeks to demonstrate how wholesome vegetarian meals can be made and consumed as well as embrace sustainable eating habits.
Shared Significance
Although the two observances are different in nature, they both focus on the themes of responsibility, health and compassion . The first one encourages older citizens to be treated with dignity and care, whereas the second one encourages people to practice mindful living by diet. Collectively, they encourage people to live in ways that are people and animal and planet loving.
