Global Air Pollution Crisis Deepens, IQAir Report Highlights PM2.5 Threat
The World Air Quality Report 2025 by IQAir ranks Pakistan as the most polluted country globally, followed by Bangladesh and Tajikistan. India is placed sixth, reflecting persistent air quality challenges.
Global Pollution Rankings and Trends
The report lists Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo among the most polluted nations. In contrast, countries like the United States and United Kingdom rank significantly lower, indicating relatively cleaner air. The findings reveal stark global disparities in air quality and environmental management.
Data Coverage and Methodology
The analysis is based on data from over 40,000 monitoring stations across 9,446 cities in 143 regions. Sources include government networks, research institutions, private sensors, and citizen initiatives. The primary metric used is PM2.5 concentration, a critical indicator of air pollution due to its severe health impacts.
City-Level Insights and Indian Scenario
At the city level, Loni is ranked as the most polluted globally, followed by Hotan and Byrnihat. Delhi stands fourth, continuing to face severe pollution levels. Notably, many of the world’s most polluted cities are concentrated in India, Pakistan, and China. In contrast, Nieuwoudtville recorded the cleanest air.
Health Impact and Environmental Concerns
The report highlights that around 91% of countries exceed the World Health Organization recommended PM2.5 limits. Rising industrial emissions, urbanisation, and wildfire events have worsened air quality. Prolonged exposure, especially among children, can lead to severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, making air pollution a critical public health issue.
