- The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and Union Territories , including West Bengal , starting November 4, 2025 . This exercise aims to update voter records ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections , ensuring the “purity” and accuracy of electoral rolls.
Why the SIR is Being Conducted
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is not new — India has conducted eight such exercises between 1951 and 2004 .
According to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar , the SIR seeks to correct errors such as:
-
Duplicate voter entries
-
Names of deceased individuals
-
Wrongful inclusion of non-citizens
-
Voters registered in multiple places
The last major SIR in West Bengal was held in 2002 , making this a long-overdue update.
States Involved in SIR 2025
The SIR is being held in West Bengal , Andaman & Nicobar Islands , Chhattisgarh , Goa , Gujarat , Kerala , Lakshadweep , Madhya Pradesh , Puducherry , Rajasthan , Tamil Nadu , and Uttar Pradesh .
Among these, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry will face elections in 2026 .
