Waaree Energies to Build India’s Largest Battery Gigafactory

₹8,175 Crore Lithium-Ion Plant Planned in Andhra Pradesh

Waaree Energies has committed to establishing India’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory at Rambilli in Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh . The project, involving an investment of ₹8,175 crore, will feature a manufacturing capacity of 16 GWh and has secured in-principle approval from the State Investment Promotion Board.


India’s Largest Integrated Battery Facility

The proposed gigafactory is designed to cover the entire battery value chain, including cell production, battery pack assembly, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). With a capacity of 16 gigawatt-hours, the facility is set to become the largest battery manufacturing unit in India.

Its integrated structure is expected to enhance domestic value addition and reduce reliance on imported battery cells and components, particularly from established East Asian suppliers.


Strengthening the Clean-Energy Ecosystem

State authorities described the investment as a strategic milestone. The facility aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s policy framework aimed at developing a comprehensive clean-energy ecosystem, encompassing renewable power generation, manufacturing, and storage technologies.

The state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy has already attracted investments in renewable energy infrastructure. The battery gigafactory represents a crucial step towards technological and manufacturing backward integration.


Strategic Importance for Energy Transition

Large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturing plays a pivotal role in India’s energy transition. Energy storage systems are critical for managing intermittency in solar and wind generation, stabilising power grids, and supporting electric mobility expansion.

The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate the growth of ancillary industries within the region.
