Introduction
India has taken another major step towards becoming a global semiconductor hub. The Union Cabinet led by Narendra Modi has approved two new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission.
These projects involve a combined investment of more than ?3,936 crore. Both projects will be established in Gujarat.
The projects are expected to create more than 2,200 skilled jobs. They will also strengthen India’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem.
Why Semiconductors Are Important
Semiconductors are the foundation of modern electronics.
They are used in:
- Smartphones
- Computers
- Automobiles
- Medical equipment
- Defence systems
- Communication networks
Without semiconductors, modern digital technology cannot function.
Today, countries around the world are trying to strengthen domestic chip manufacturing because semiconductor supply chains are strategically important.
India Semiconductor Mission
The India Semiconductor Mission was launched to develop a strong semiconductor ecosystem in India.
The mission focuses on:
- Chip manufacturing
- Semiconductor design
- Electronics production
- Research and innovation
The government provides policy support and financial incentives to attract investment.
The latest approvals increase the total number of semiconductor projects under the mission to 12.
Two New Semiconductor Projects Approved
The Cabinet has approved two major facilities in Gujarat.
These include:
- A compound semiconductor fabrication and Mini/Micro-LED facility
- An Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) unit
Together, these projects will strengthen both manufacturing and packaging capabilities.
Crystal Matrix Limited Project in Dholera
The first project will be developed by Crystal Matrix Limited in Dholera, Gujarat.
This facility will focus on:
- Compound semiconductor fabrication
- Mini/Micro-LED display technology
- Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology
What Is Gallium Nitride Technology?
Gallium Nitride, or GaN, is an advanced semiconductor material.
It offers:
- Faster performance
- Better energy efficiency
- Higher power handling capacity
