  • Sanctions Imposed: On 24 October 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department, in an Executive order 14059, sanctioned Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his first lady, Veronica Alcocer Garcias, their son, Nicolas Petro Burgos and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti.
  • Scope: Seals American assets of listed ones and prohibits American parties to conduct any transactions with them.

Official Justification:

  • The U.S. Treasury has mentioned the policies by Petro as empowering drug cartels when coca cultivation is on the record (253,000 hectares in 2023).
