U.P. Electoral Roll Revision Extended Again, Final Voter List Due in April

Fourth Extension for Electoral Roll Revision in Uttar Pradesh

The Election Commission of India has granted a fourth extension to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh, citing administrative and logistical considerations. The decision was announced on February 6, 2026 , following a formal request from the State’s Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa.

With this extension, the process of filing claims and objections will now remain open until March 6, 2026 , offering voters additional time to verify and correct their electoral details.

Revised Timeline and Legal Basis

Invoking its powers under the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 , the Commission has revised the entire SIR schedule. As per the updated timeline:

  • Claims and objections: open till March 6

  • Issue of notices to electors: permitted till March 27

  • Final publication of electoral rolls: scheduled for April 10, 2026

The ECI stated that the extension was granted after assessing field-level feedback and other relevant factors linked to the scale of the revision exercise in India’s most populous State.

Scale of Revisions and Deletions

According to official data, Uttar Pradesh had 15.44 crore voters in the previous electoral roll. In the draft roll prepared during the SIR:

  • 12.55 crore names were retained

  • Around 2.89 crore entries (about 19%) were removed

The deletions were attributed to reasons such as death, permanent migration, and multiple registrations. However, the unusually high number of exclusions has triggered political debate in the State.

Political Concerns and Safeguards

Several opposition parties have alleged that eligible voters may have been wrongly deleted from the rolls. They have demanded greater transparency and outreach to ensure that no citizen is disenfranchised.

The Election Commission has reiterated that the SIR process includes statutory safeguards, allowing voters to submit claims, raise objections, and seek corrections before the final list is notified.
