Tribal Art on World Stage: PM Modi’s Unique Gifts to Global Leaders

Overview

PM Modi gave unique tribal gifts to world leaders. He presented Gond art to Sweden’s Crown Princess, Muga silk and Shirui Lily stole to Italy’s PM, and black rice to UAE’s Queen Mother. These gifts show India’s rich tribal culture and soft power.

A New Way of Doing Diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited several countries. During these visits, he gave special gifts to world leaders. These gifts were not expensive watches or cars. They were rooted in India’s tribal traditions and indigenous craftsmanship. The gifts included Gond art, Muga silk, a Shirui Lily stole, and black rice. This is called cultural diplomacy. It means using culture to build friendships between nations.

Why Gifts Matter in International Relations

Gift-giving is an old practice in diplomacy. A thoughtful gift can carry a deep message. It shows respect. It tells a story about your country. India’s latest approach focuses on tribal heritage. This is a smart move. It highlights India’s diverse identity. It also supports local artisans and tribal communities. When a world leader receives a Gond painting or a Muga silk stole, they also receive a piece of India’s soul.

Gond Painting for Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria

One of the most beautiful gifts was a Gond painting. PM Modi presented it to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. Gond art comes from Madhya Pradesh. The Gond tribal community is one of India’s largest indigenous groups. Their art is famous for dots, lines, and bright colours. The paintings tell stories of nature, animals, and village life. This gift did more than please the Princess. It also supported tribal artists. It helped preserve an ancient storytelling tradition.

Gifts for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received two textile gifts. Both came from India’s Northeast. These gifts showed the rich weaving culture of that region.

First gift: Muga Silk Stole from Assam
Muga silk is very special. It is produced only in Assam. It has a natural golden colour. It is strong and shiny. Muga silk has a GI tag. GI means Geographical Indication. This tag protects products that come from a specific place. The silk is woven by traditional Assamese weavers. Giving this stole to a world leader promotes Assam’s heritage.

Second gift: Shirui Lily Stole from Manipur
The second stole was inspired by the Shirui Lily. This is Manipur’s state flower. It is a rare flower. It grows only in the hills of Manipur. The stole was crafted by the Tangkhul Naga community. They are a tribal group from Manipur. The design on the stole looks like the beautiful pink-blue flower. This gift celebrated both nature and tribal craftsmanship.

Black Rice for the Queen Mother of UAE

PM Modi also met the Queen Mother of the United Arab Emirates. He gave her a very special food gift. It was  Black Rice  from Manipur. In the local language, it is called Chak-Hao.

Black rice is not just any rice. It has a deep purple-black colour. It is grown mainly by tribal hill communities in Northeast India. The rice is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are good for health. It also has high nutritional value. People in Manipur use it in traditional dishes and festivals. By gifting black rice, PM Modi highlighted India’s indigenous food heritage.
