India Activates 165-Laboratory Network to Track Hantavirus After MV Hondius Cases

Overview

India has activated a large surveillance network of 165 laboratories to monitor hantavirus infections. The move came after reports of hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. The Union Health Ministry started precautionary monitoring to protect public health and strengthen early virus detection across the country.

Tamil Nadu Forms Singappen Special Task Force for Women’s Safety on 11 May 2026

Overview

On 11 May 2026, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the formation of the Singappen Special Task Force. This force is for women’s safety and preventive protection. It works under the direct supervision of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. This is one of his first initiatives after taking oath on 10 May 2026. The first phase has 36 sanctioned posts and is headed by an Inspector General of Police.

13 Baiga Tribe Children Rescued from Bonded Labour in Chhattisgarh

Overview

The Baiga tribe is a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in central India. Recently, 13 Baiga children were rescued from bonded labour in Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district. The Baiga people primarily live in Madhya Pradesh. They speak Baigani, practise slash-and-burn farming called Bewar, and have deep forest ties. They were the first community in India to receive habitat rights.

US Proposes Higher Minimum Salaries for H-1B Visa Workers from 27 March 2026

Overview

On 27 March 2026, the US Department of Labor proposed a new rule. It will raise the minimum salary for H-1B visa workers. The lowest wage level moves from the 17th to the 34th percentile. The highest level moves from the 67th to the 88th percentile. For an entry-level software engineer in San Francisco, the minimum salary becomes about $162,000 per year.

Actor Vijay Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on 10 May 2026

Overview

On 10 May 2026, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay became the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He took oath at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. His party, TVK, won 108 seats and broke the nearly six-decade-old two-party rule of DMK and AIADMK. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath.
